A club started at Garnet Valley High School made to create an anti-racist school environment, where all students of color are supported/seen.
How it started
Growing up in my predominantly white Pennsylvania high school, there were many instances of racism. I would hear many stories of where a teacher or student would say/do something racist, without any party truly held accountable. By the summer going into my Junior year of high school, I knew something had to change.
I then immediately organized a small group to start meeting in my basement to talk about their personal experiences and action. From there, we met with the principal and made it an official school organization titled HERE, Humanity in Ethnicity, Race and Equality.
Presented to entire Class of 2020 and 2021 about subconscious racial bias/privilege 2 years in a row
Organized a district-wide conversation event on race with Dr. Amanda Kemp
Created a Zombie Run with $1,200 raised for Rise Against Hunger
Developed a student course about justice and Youth Court working with school administration
Helped develop district-wide Global Citizenship committee to address issues on race
Since leaving for college, the club has expanded into the middle school, has over 60+ members and has worked in conjunction with other student led justice groups.
